Gravity and flight

In June, the 7 billionth person was born. This past year has seen immense change: from catastrophic earthquakes, floods and tsunamis, economic meltdowns in Europe and ongoing war and unrest in the Middle East; to the dawning of an Arab spring, Julian Assange and Australia’s first female Prime Minister. The world’s population continues to grow while its’ habitable land keeps shrinking. This year’s Indoor Laneway project will look at the place and importance of art in volatile times. This year’s theme Gravity and Flight opens up a space for the creation of art with weight and meaning, while at the same time, inviting participants to find humour and create wonder in the everyday.

My name is Eugenia and I am an artist based in Melbourne. I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with Indoor Laneway for the last three years and am always inspired by the work that the project participants create together. This year will be better than ever and I’m really looking forward to our exhibition outcome at the Arts Centre in September this year.

I will set approximately five Make and Create tasks between 18 July and the end of August. These tasks will explore the following themes:

  • Meaning: exploring ideas that have weight/meaning for participants
  • Longevity: making a lasting mark
  • Rediscovery: approaching issues with a fresh eye/perspective, bird’s eye view
  • The ground beneath our feet: art that is political and social in a time of climate change, natural disaster and intolerance towards asylum seekers
  • Inspiration: curated art, culture and news to inspire our art-making
